ASCII Invaders (download 16k) Author: Corey Mercer ![]() Description It never ceases to amaze me that, in a world dominated by graphical operating systems like Windows and OS X, new text-mode games are still being developed. As a programmer, I think part of the appeal is the way text mode lets you get close to the inner workings of the computer. There are no fancy bitmap editors, visual programming "wizards", or sculpted dialog boxes to get in the way. It's just you and your code, and how well you can wield it to produce the effect you are looking for. I imagine it was something like this that inspired Corey Mercer to write
ASCII Invaders. The minimalist ASCII design, by its very simplicity, evokes the feeling of the original
Space Invaders arcade game, and the sound effects could have come straight out of an Atari 2600 console. Ah yes, this is the stuff
geek memories are made of, which I suppose could be embarrasing ... except that I know you wouldn't have found this site unless
you were one yourself ... ;-)Troubleshooting Discussions
